As the new year approaches, it’s an excellent opportunity to plan the trips you’ve been longing to take. While the world offers endless possibilities, travel experts have identified a few standout destinations that should be on your radar in 2025.
Experts have observed a surge in popularity for certain locations, both domestically and internationally. Below are the top destinations they recommend for next year and the reasons why you might want to book a trip:
Thailand
“Plan your trip to Thailand now,” said Adam Duckworth, president and founder of Travelmation. “This Southeast Asian country is renowned for its breathtaking beaches, magnificent architecture, and luxurious resorts. However, 2025 is poised for an extra spotlight due to the upcoming season of The White Lotus.”
Duckworth noted an uptick in travel to Hawaii and Sicily following earlier seasons of the HBO series and expects a similar trend for Thailand. “It seems the next season will be set on Koh Samui, and we anticipate fans will follow,” he explained.
Thailand offers more than just luxury resorts. Visitors flock to the country for its unique experiences, such as exploring Khao Sok National Park, savoring local cuisine, wandering through Bangkok, enjoying traditional Thai massages, and much more.
Orlando, Florida
For those seeking a domestic getaway, Jonathan Alder, founder and CEO of Jonathan’s Travels, suggests Orlando. The reason? The grand opening of Universal’s Epic Universe in May 2025. This marks the first major theme park debut in Orlando in over two decades.
“Already a top travel destination as the theme park capital of the world, this new park will attract visitors with its five distinct lands, making it Universal’s largest park yet,” Alder said. “Highlights include Super Nintendo World, Harry Potter and The Battle at The Ministry, among others.”
Orlando is also a culinary hotspot. It was crowned the best food city in America in 2023. Additionally, its proximity to both Florida coasts makes it easy to incorporate a beach trip into your itinerary.
Italy
Italy has always been a beloved travel destination—who doesn’t love pasta?—but next year brings an added allure. Duckworth predicts a surge in visitors thanks to the 2025 Jubilee, a holy year celebrated in Rome and Vatican City.
“Rome expects about 35 million visitors for this event, so brace yourself for larger crowds,” Duckworth said. “Major renovations across the city have made it more accessible and stunning than it has been in years.”
Japan
Japan has seen a dramatic increase in tourism over the past year, a trend Duckworth expects to persist into 2025.
“A favorable exchange rate has attracted many first-time visitors, and they’ve returned home raving about the culture, beauty, and exceptional cuisine,” he said. “Tokyo and Kyoto remain the top destinations, particularly in spring, when the cherry blossoms bloom.”
Kenya
Kenya is set to become a prime destination for safari adventures, according to Alder. He recommends 2025 as an ideal time for Americans to broaden their horizons beyond Europe and explore more diverse locations.
“In July and August, during the summer holidays, visitors can witness the spectacular Great Migration across the Mara River,” he said. “It’s an unparalleled experience to be surrounded by thousands of wildebeest and zebras.”
New Zealand
Traveling to New Zealand has often been challenging for Americans, but Alder noted that improved flight options, including frequent nonstop routes, have made it more accessible than ever.
In 2025, he predicts more travelers will explore this breathtaking country. “New Zealand is a haven for adventure seekers, as well as food, wine, and hiking enthusiasts,” Alder said. “You can spend two weeks discovering its diverse regions, stunning landscapes, and exciting activities, such as skydiving, which offers extraordinary views of its forests and volcanoes.”
Scotland
For a peaceful European getaway, Alder suggests Scotland, especially as many other popular destinations tend to be overcrowded.
“Scotland offers rich culture, captivating scenery, and the chance to enjoy world-class whiskey,” he said. Visitors can explore distilleries, embark on scenic hikes, and tour enchanting castles.
The country’s cooler summer climate is another advantage. “Compared to the sweltering heat in southern Europe, Scotland provides a refreshing escape,” Alder added.
Antarctica
Alder describes Antarctica as a “see it while it’s still here” destination, noting its pristine environment and bucket-list appeal.
“With climate change altering its unique landscape, now is the time to experience its remarkable beauty and wildlife,” Alder explained.
For an unforgettable journey, Alder recommends a voyage that includes South Georgia Island and the Falklands. “South Georgia offers what many consider the world’s greatest wildlife encounter—imagine being surrounded by over 450,000 penguins.”
Emerging Travel Trends
If you’re seeking unique travel experiences, consider some of the emerging trends Duckworth highlighted for 2025:
Astrotourism and Noctourism: These focus on stargazing and celestial events, such as the aurora borealis. “Many travelers are already sharing Northern Lights photos taken from their backyards, and travel companies are organizing astronomy cruises and guided nighttime activities worldwide,” Duckworth said.
Detour Destinations: These trips emphasize smaller, quieter towns near major cities like Paris, London, or New York. Travelers may spend a day or two in the bustling city before retreating to a more serene location.
All-Inclusive Resorts: These are making a comeback, catering to various budgets and offering both affordable and luxurious options.
With so many exciting options and trends, 2025 promises to be a remarkable year for travel enthusiasts.
